If I read Daniel's Bride again today after having read thousands (might be a slight exaggeration) of romances since I first read it, I am not sure what my opinion would be. I might have to read it again to see.
I agree that LLM does have some sensual love scenes. There is one in Lily and the Major (one of the first romances I read) that was just WOW! It definitely opened my eyes.

I warned you about the snake...
I can't remember if this was new when I read it or a re-release - is this a 1980s romance? I wasn't reading them back then, but my sense is that they tended to have a larger than life feel. I must admit that my memory of Daniel is positive. He had the commanding alpha feel to me...at the time. I need to re-read this and see if I still like him or if my taste has changed.
Your point on the sex scenes being erotic and well done is one of the things I remember most about LLM. When the hotter romances started hitting the shelves over the past few years, I thought about LLM. She was the first I read who really took time with sensual love scenes. She was way ahead of her time on this score in my view.

By the way, comatose people shouldn't try to type. That should read "...lack of consistency..."

In theory, I'm sound asleep because I'm up at 5, but your comments made me think about Daniel. I'm not a POV freak (ha! she says, knowing herself), but there was a real lack of inconsistency that lead to Daniel's character being shortchanged. I felt I knew Deuter (who, sadly, didn't have a real role in the book -- had you left him out, I think the story would have been just fine, not a great thing for a secondary character who actually had a personality) better than I knew Daniel. I really think this was a function of too much story. Miller didn't leave enough time to flesh out her major plot elements, much less her smaller ones.
Darn -- secondary characters. Should have talked more about them. I'm so going to be fired from this gig...

It had been years since I read Daniel's Bride when I decided to root for it as my oldie but goodie. After reading your review, I remember a great deal more about it then I did at the time I rooted for it. It does seem to have a little bit of everything in it doesn't it?...except leprosy...LOL. And I agree with you about Daniel....I wish he had been more open. I still enjoyed it though when I read it. I enjoyed reading your take on it.
I enjoy Linda Lael Miller's books. She has quite a few other ones that you might want to check out if you have never read any of hers (Emma and the Outlaw, Caroline and the Raider, and Lily and the Major are some I read years ago).
