Thanks for the recommendations...I have read almost all of Julie Garwood's historicals but none of her contemporaries. I will have to check out some of the books and authors you mentioned :)

Jennifer - Depends on what you like to read. If you're looking for a gothic, try Lydia Joyce. If you like romantic suspense/adventure, try Alison Kent's SG5 series, Pamela Clare's Extreme Exposure and Amy Fetzer's Naked Truth. For fun and flirty, Jennifer Crusie and Erin McCarthy are always good. Kyra Davis' Sex, Murder and a Double Latte is a new favorite of mine.
If you click on a favorite genre on the right side of the toolbar, you'll see what we've reviewed so far. And, I've read almost every Brava and everything ever written by Jayne Ann Krentz, Linda Howard and Julie Garwood (they're all-time favs), so if you want recommendations on those, let me know.

Karen - you're not the only one counting days.
I think of the repetition thing as a novice mistake - being a novice, I can say that without fear of getting my butt kicked too hard. Also, a jerky hero usually doesn't turn me off. I can tolerate a great deal from fictional men, so long as I see an avenue for redemption. Here, I found him unlikable and couldn't understand why the heroine would ever fall for him and fall so quickly.
Really, I wanted to like this one, I just couldn't get there. Clearly Wendy had an even harder time with it. I think the book picked up at the end, but had I been reading for pleasure (not just to review), I'm not sure I would have held on long enough to find out.
As far as gothic romance is concerned, I'd suggest trying Lydia Joyce. She is a relatively new author, but her debut (The Veil of Night) was very good.

It sounds like this is a book that the author has tried to "dumb down" for readers, something that I hate.
H.K.-"The source of his affliction is not a secret - it is spelled out, in full, on at least three occasions in the book."
"
But, the reader has to get past repetitive writing and many superfluous scenes to get there."
Think I'll pass.

Thanks for this review. I'd seen this book earlier, but hadn't seen many reviews on it and was wondering how it was. Of course, now I'm still on the fence. Maybe a library book someday.
